HONG KONG, April 5 (UPI) -- Russia's nuclear chief has said privatization of the atomic industry is out of the question.
RIA news agency reported Wednesday Sergey Kiriyenko, head of Russia's Federal Atomic Energy Agency, said: "Any talk about privatization of nuclear power plants and other nuclear facilities in Russia is either provocation or incompetence, or a combination of the two. We have not discussed, do not discuss and will not discuss any options for a handover of Russian nuclear facilities into private hands."
Kiriyenko, who was addressing the World Nuclear Fuel Cycle 2006 conference in Hong Kong, said all of Russia's nuclear industry would remain under state control, and key assets that had previously been lost were currently being reacquired.
The Federal Atomic Energy Agency will work with Russia's Foreign Ministry, he added, to try and remove import restrictions on Russian nuclear fuel in place in the United States and European Union.
