LONDON, Feb. 21 (UPI) -- With Britain's rains at historic levels, the government must "redouble efforts" to build a defense against climate change, a Friends of Earth researcher said.
Guy Shrubsole said Thursday Britain is using too many fossil fuels, which the World Meteorological Organization said last year were contributing to climate change.
Shrubsole, a campaigner for FOE's British office, said the more fossil fuels the British economy burns "the more floods we see" and it's time to "redouble efforts to tackle climate change."
The Met Office, the nation's weather forecaster, said the 19.2 inches of rain since the beginning of December is the highest total on record. In a 29-page report published in early February, the office said recent weather events "may be how climate change may manifest itself" in the region.
