London stumps for nuclear energy

LONDON, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- A nuclear power deal for a facility on the western British coast will be a "great deal" for utility customers, a British energy minister said.

The British government said it's close to striking a deal with a French energy company EDF to build a twin nuclear power facility near the country's western coast.

Energy and Climate Change Secretary Edward Davey said long-winded discussions with EDF were close to a conclusion.

European regulations forbid the government from subsidizing such developments directly. Davey said in an interview broadcast Sunday by the BBC consumers wouldn't pay the price for the new twin facility over its 35-year life span.

"I'm convinced I'll be able to look consumers in the eye and say we've got a great deal," he said.

He said the administration of British Prime Minister David Cameron was delivering new power stations and the power to attract enough foreign investments to keep the lights on in the country in a low-carbon fashion.

He offered no time frame for development, saying only he was "extremely close" to striking a deal.
