Enbridge makes final repairs on Line 6B

CALGARY, Alberta, March 14 (UPI) -- A new pipeline under the St. Clair River in Michigan is ready to link to a section of the Lakehead oil pipeline system, executives said.

Officials at Enbridge Inc. said repairs along Line 6B of the pipeline system were completed and engineers were getting the network ready for deliveries.

Crews from Enbridge pulled a 3,450-foot pipeline through a tunnel under the St. Clair River from Canada to the Michigan side last week.

Enbridge spokeswoman Lorraine Grymala told the Calgary Herald preparations were under way to link to Line 6B.

"In coming weeks, new valves will be installed on both sides of the river, the existing pipeline segment will be decommissioned and the new pipeline segment will be tied into the existing Line 6B," she said.

A section of Line 6B ruptured in southern Michigan in late July, dumping nearly 20,000 barrels of oil into the area's Kalamazoo River and Tallmadge Creek.

The U.S. Department of Transportation's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration said in a restart plan for Line 6B that Enbridge needed to replace the damaged St. Clair leg within a year.
