Repsol enters North American markets

SAINT JOHN, New Brunswick, June 22 (UPI) -- Spanish energy giant Repsol delivers liquefied natural gas shipments to northeast Canada this week, marking its first entry into North American markets.

The 1 billion cubic feet per day Canaport terminal will provide enough natural gas to heat 5 million homes and commercial buildings in Canada and the northeast United States.

Repsol will work with a variety of suppliers to bring gas to its North American clients under flexible contracts.

"The Canaport LNG terminal commissioning demonstrates Repsol's commitment to the LNG business and natural gas as the fuel of choice, for today and for the future," said Antonio Brufau, chairman of Repsol.

The terminal will meet about 20 percent of the natural gas demand for New York and New England though the 90-mile Brunswick pipeline and other transit networks.

Repsol notes the terminal is the first of its kind on the eastern coast of North America in more than three decades and the first such facility ever built in Canada.
