BP to reduce damage to Azeri energy sector

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- Every effort will be made to reduce the damage to Azerbaijan's energy sector from the South Ossetian conflict between Russia and Georgia, BP officials said.

Andrew Inglis, chief executive of BP's exploration and production business, met with Azeri President Ilham Aliyev to discuss the impact on oil exports from the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli and Shah Deniz fields, the Azerbaijan Business Center reported Wednesday.

Inglis said BP was forced by the regional conflict to reduce oil production throughout Azerbaijan because of interruptions in exports.

The visit was the first to Azerbaijan since a fire in eastern Turkey disrupted flow through the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline Aug. 6. Military action in Georgia halted flow through BTC and several other regional pipelines in the following days.

Inglis told the Azeri president BP would make every effort to reduce the damage to the State Oil Co. of Azerbaijan Republic from the disruptions, pledging to ensure Azerbaijan had sufficient energy supplies for the winter months.
