Apple acquires app-testing company Burstly

CUPERTINO, Calif., Feb. 21 (UPI) -- Continuing the trend of acquisitions by major tech companies, Apple acquired Burstly, a company that makes smartphone and tablet applications.

Apple hasn't disclosed the terms of the acquisition but company spokeswoman Kristin Huguet has confirmed the purchase.

Burstly's most popular app, TestFlight, allows app developers to test and manage software with a limited audience. The app also collects data on usage and bugs encountered, and provides it to the app developer. It's an interesting purchase considering Apple has restrictions on how widely developers can beta test apps on its iOS platform.

The announcement comes days after Burstly announced its services would not be available to Android users.

Unlike Facebook and Google, Apple hasn't had any mega-acquistions, instead maintaining a steady pace of smaller purchases. Google purchased Nest Labs for $3.2 billion and Facebook this week announced the purchase of messaging service WhatsApp for $19 billion.

In its latest SEC filings, Apple disclosed that it spent $525 million on deals in the quarter ending Dec. 30, 2013, about double what it spent in the previous quarter.
