Pennsylvania State Police were alerted to a scam in which an elderly woman was told she had won $18,000 from Rite Aid.

The scammers reportedly told the woman to purchase a $500 prepaid Green Dot card at Rite Aid in Kittanning barracks to pay for the taxes on her award. The scam works if someone gives the card serial number to the scammer.

Fortuately, the woman did not fall for the trick, instead alerting her son, who contacted police, State Trooper Joe Zandarski said.

Rite Aid has been made aware of the scam.
