Microsoft is expected to unveil a big update to its flagship Windows 10 OS at a product launch event in New York City on Wednesday.

As with most events like this in the tech world, there's little fact and a lot of speculation about what we'll see. Since it's called "Windows 10 Event," you can count on the OS update, code-named Redstone 2, being delivered as the focus. It's planned the be the first of two big updates to come in 2017.

The OS update is expected to add virtual and augmented reality elements.

Speculation on what else may come focuses on a few key possibilities, most connected to Surface, the company's in-house line of tablets, tablet hybrids and laptops.

Trademark filings reveal a possible all-in-one Surface desktop computer, potentially called "Surface Studio." Patent filings show images and details of what could come, revealing a slim, modular design in a variety of configurations and an apparent plan to simplify expansion and upgrades by adding stackable hardware boxes.

FCC filings show Surface- branded peripherals that look like an update to Microsoft's Designer Bluetooth Desktop package, which could be included as elements of Surface Studio.

Microsoft also filed a trademark application for "Paint 3D," so that software could be adding that capability. There could also be Surface-branded products like a phone and wearables, i.e. a new fitness tracker – an odd back-door filing for a broad expansion of "Surface" trademarked products that began with a local filing in Slovenia has now advanced to a global filing.
