PALO ALTO, Calif., Oct. 20 (UPI) -- Tesla Motors has announced all vehicles in production will be equipped with self-driving capabilities going forward, something the company said would provide more safety than human drivers.

Tesla on Wednesday said self-driving vehicles are important to improve transportation safety and to transition the world into an environmentally sustainable future. Tesla vehicles in production, including the Model 3, "will have the hardware needed for full self-driving capability at a safety level substantially greater than that of a human driver."

"Full autonomy will enable a Tesla to be substantially safer than a human driver, lower the financial cost of transportation for those who own a car and provide low-cost on-demand mobility for those who do not," said a release from Tesla, which is owned by eccentric billionaire Elon Musk.

Tesla models will be fitted with eight cameras that surround the vehicles, providing 360 degrees of visibility for the car for up to 820 feet. A forward-facing radar will provide information from the surrounding world to the vehicle through a redundant wavelength, which allows it to see through other cars and weather elements such as heavy rain, fog and dust.

"Twelve updated ultrasonic sensors complement this vision, allowing for detection of both hard and soft objects at nearly twice the distance of the prior system," Tesla said.

A new on-board computer will process the data received with more than 40 times more computing power than that used previously. The computer will run Tesla's neural network for vision, sonar and radar processing software.

"Together, this system provides a view of the world that a driver alone cannot access, seeing in every direction simultaneously and on wavelengths that go far beyond the human senses," Tesla said.
