BURBANK, Calif., Sept. 26 (UPI) -- The Walt Disney Company might join the sweepstakes to purchase social media giant Twitter, insiders and news reports said Monday.

Disney is conferring with financial advisers about the possibility of buying the tweeting service, which is valued around $16 billion.

News of a potential sale of Twitter have persisted for months, ever since the company got wind that multiple entities might be interested.

Others said to be interested in acquiring the San Francisco-based Twitter are Salesforce.com, Alphabet Inc., and Verizon.

"It's a video distribution play," analyst James Cakmak told Bloomberg Monday. "What Disney has to think about is what is its place in a post cord-cutting world. They are investing in technology for distribution -- and this would give them the platform to reach audiences around the world."

Neither company commented Monday about the news that Disney may be interested.

Shares of Twitter rose by 3.3 percent Monday.
