MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Aug. 23 (UPI) -- Electric automaker Tesla on Tuesday unveiled newer, faster and longer-lasting versions of its Model S and Model X vehicles.

In fact, the Model S variant, the P100D with Ludicrous mode, the company says, is the fastest mass production car ever built -- able to go from 0-60 in 2 and-a-half seconds.

Both the new versions are available with a new battery pack that stretches the range between charges further than any electric vehicle has before.

"The 100 kWh battery also increases range substantially to an estimated 315 miles on the EPA cycle ... making it the first to go beyond 300 miles and the longest range production electric vehicle by far," Tesla said of the Model S in a statement.

The Model X crossover, Tesla said, already the quickest SUV in the world, will be even faster with the battery upgrade -- from 0-60 in 2.9 seconds. It can go 289 miles on a single charge.

"Model S and Model X are engineered to be the safest cars on the road and to have the highest ratings from NHTSA," Tesla said.

Both vehicles, however, are not cheap. The P100D versions of the Model S and Model X each start around $135,000.
