Tumblr to run ads across all blogs

By Shawn Price

LOS ANGELES, July 28 (UPI) -- Blogging site Tumblr announced a plan to introduce advertising across all pages of the site beginning Thursday.

The site is owned by Yahoo which is being bought by Verizon, and will likely give bloggers the ability to opt out and advertisers the ability to connect with bloggers, like in the site's Creatr program, but won't immediately give bloggers a cut of the profits from the ads. The site is current host to more than 302 million blogs.

Tumblr bloggers will need to register to eventually earn money from the ads. The registration will begin later in the year. Further details were not announced.

The blogging site has failed to meet sales goals and was recently valued at $0 by analysts.

Tumblr was bought by Yahoo for just over $1 billion in 2013. Verizon, which owns AOL, purchased Yahoo's various businesses for $4.8 billion, including Tumblr, photography site Flickr, Yahoo News and the company's ad tech systems.
