General Mills widens flour recall again after 4 more people get sick

By Sarah Mulé

MINNEAPOLIS, July 26 (UPI) -- General Mills is adding more production dates to its flour recall after four more illnesses were reported, the company said in a statement.

E. coli bacteria have been detected in additional flour samples, though General Mills is not yet aware if the this is an industry-wide issue or one isolated to General Mills' flour. The company is also using new detection methods to determine if the levels of bacteria are higher than normal.

All of the reported illnesses are connected to the consumption of raw dough or batter, which General Mills cautions against.

"We want all the avid home bakers out there to have peace of mind and know the most important thing they can do to keep safe is to not eat uncooked flour," Jeff Harmening, General Mills president and chief operating officer, said Monday.

The expanded recall includes Gold Medal and Signature Kitchen flour with production dates from May 31, 2016 through February 10, 2016.

The recall applies to specific UPC codes and to packages with a "better if used by date" through August 2017.
