CHARLOTTE, N.C., May 28 (UPI) -- Coca-Cola will begin selling limited edition patriotic red, white and blue cans over Memorial Day weekend to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the United Service Organizations.

Coke was a founding partner with the USO during World War II, when American companies and entertainers set out to offer soldiers some homespun fun to help take their minds off the war.

The patriotic design will be on some 16-ounce Coke cans and select value packs.

The company also plans to kick off its "Share a Coke and a Song" campaign at this weekend's Coca-Cola 600 Nascar race. The patriotic cans will also feature a lyric from a patriotic song.

"Since the organization's very beginning in 1941, the USO has been near and dear to us. Our relationship is now part of our heritage, our DNA. The patriotic graphics on special 16 oz. cans and multiple club packs are a small way of saying thanks to the USO for all they do," said Erika von Heiland Strader, director of community marketing for Coca-Cola North America. "On behalf of all our Coca-Cola associates, we congratulate the USO on 75 years of connecting service members to their family, home and country."

USO Chairman and retired Gen. George W. Casey will serve as the Grand Marshal of the Coca-Cola 600, as the sponsor's guest, and the company said 6,000 service members will be in attendance at the Charlotte Motor Speedway for the race.
