WASHINGTON, April 30 (UPI) -- Nissan has recalled about 3.5 million vehicles worldwide due to issues with its front-passenger airbag and other safety systems.

The company asked owners of 2001-2003 Nissan Maximas, 2002-2004 Pathfinders and 2002-2006 Sentras to return their vehicles to a dealer for Takata-branded airbag repairs as soon as possible.

More recent models, including the 2013-2016 Altima, 2014-2017 Rogue, 2016-2017 Maxima, 2015-2016 Murano, 2013-2017 Pathfinder, 2013-2016 Leaf and the 2014-2016 Infinity Q50 and Qx60 have also been recalled.

According to a report published on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website Friday, the cars may not distinguish a child front-seat passenger from an adult, which can cause serious injury in a crash.

About 622,110 Nissan Sentras made between 2013 and 2016 have also been issued a recall for problems with the front-passenger seat belt buckle.

"In the unusual event (specifically warned against in the Owner's Manual) of installing the child restraint system (CRS) in the front seat, the seat belt bracket may deform if the seat belt used to secure the CRS is significantly over-tensioned," a separate report said.

Takata, one of the biggest automotive parts manufacturers in the world, builds various safety parts for Nissan vehicles. The Japan Times reported more than 100 million vehicles built with Takata parts may be subject to an airbag recall.

Most of the recalled vehicles are located in North America, Nissan said.
