LOS ANGELES, March 7 (UPI) -- Apple's iPhone could feature an OLED screen in either the upcoming iPhone 7S or iPhone 8, the Nikkei Asian Review reported last week.
The tech giant had planned to introduce phones that used organic light-emitting diode or OLEDs in 2018, Nikkei reported, but will likely rollout the new phone next year.
OLED has distinct advantages over older LCD, or liquid crystal display, which is used on the current iPhone. OLED is smaller with more vivid colors and makes a more energy-efficient use of a battery charge.
Incorporating an OLED screen on the next iPhone could intensify the company's rivalry with Samsung, but might do nothing to quell consumer's "phone fatigue."
Any OLED-led redesign, of the iPhone would most likely follow the Apple Watch, which is already thought to use an OLED screen. The watch uses bright icons on a deep black background, lighting up only what needs to be lit-up instead of lighting the entire screen and giving a bright or white-colored appearance, as on other current Apple products.
