WASHINGTON, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- Britax Child Safety Inc. has recalled nearly 76,000 of its B-Safe 35 and B-Safe 35 Elite infant car seats because the handle can break while the seat is being used as a baby carrier.

The recalled products were manufactured in the United States between Oct. 1, 2014 and July 1, 2015. About 71,000 were sold in the United States, 3,900 were sold in Canada and 990 were sold in Mexico.

"The car seat carry handle can crack and break allowing the seat to fall unexpectedly, posing a risk of injury to the infant," the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said in a statement.

The product was sold between November 2014 until this month in Babies R Us, buybuy BABY, Target and other stores nationwide and online at Amazon.com, Diapers.com and other online retailers. The price ranges from $210 to $250.

"Consumers should immediately stop carrying the car seat by the handle until the repair is installed," the CPSC added. "All consumers who have previously registered their product with Britax will automatically receive a free repair kit."
