NORTHFIELD, Ill., Aug. 3 (UPI) -- The Kraft Heinz Company recalled 36,000 cases of individually wrapped Kraft Singles because the plastic used to wrap the cheese can become a choking hazard.

The company issued the voluntary recall Friday after receiving 10 consumer complaints, including three people who had choked on the plastic.

There is "the possibility that a thin strip of the individual packaging film may remain adhered to the slice after the wrapper has been removed," a news release from Kraft Heinz says. "If the film sticks to the slice and is not removed, it could potentially cause a choking hazard."

The recall includes 3- and 4-pound cases of Kraft Singles American and White American pasteurized cheese with "best used by" dates of Dec. 15, 2015, through Jan. 4, 2016 and manufacturing codes S54 or S55.

The products were shipped to retailers in the United States, Puerto Rico and Grand Cayman.

"We deeply regret this situation and apologize to any consumers we have disappointed. Consumers who purchased this product should not eat it." the release said.
