OAK BROOK, Ill., June 9 (UPI) -- McDonald's announced Tuesday it has hired former White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs as head of communications.

Gibbs was named executive vice president, global chief communications officer, replacing Bridget Coffing, who announced her retirement after 30 years with the fast-food company.

McDonald's also announced the appointment of Silvia Lagnado as executive vice president, global chief marketing officer.

"Robert and Silvia are both highly-respected, talented leaders who will bring a wealth of experience and outside perspective to McDonald's as we build a more modern, progressive burger company," said CEO Steve Easterbrook. "Returning excitement to our business proposition and brand is foundational to our turnaround plan, and Robert and Silvia -- with their respective teams -- will play critical roles in bringing this strategy to life."

Gibbs most recently worked with The Incite Agency, a communications advisory firm he co-founded in 2013. He started up the company after serving as press secretary during U.S. President Barack Obama's first term. He was also Obama's senior campaign advisor during his re-election campaign.
