HBO announces standalone streaming service and partnership with Apple

CUPERTINO, Calif., March 9 (UPI) -- HBO announced its new standalone streaming service and an exclusive partnership with Apple.

The service will not require a cable subscription. The HBO standalone access has been long awaited by cord cutters -- people who stop paying for cable and opt for other streaming choices such as Netflix, Hulu, Apple TV, etc.

All of its content will be exclusively available on Apple products, including the iPad, iPhone and Apple TV.

HBO CEO Richard Pleplar, who announced the partnership, said the service will cost $14.99 per month so fans can watch shows like Girls, The Sopranos, Entourage, Veep, Game of Thrones and Silicon Valley without cable.

The popular movie network dropped its new trailer for the upcoming season of Game of Thrones, featuring Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) vowing to tear down the other families who vie for her rightful throne.

Apple CEO Tim Cook also announced the company will be lowering the price of its Apple TV device from $99 to $69.
