GENEVA, Switzerland, March 7 (UPI) -- Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. showed off a concept tire at the 2015 Geneva International Motor Show this week that can produce electricity.
The "BHO3," as it's called, uses the heat generated from tires moving across a surface to generate power. The company states it could significantly improve the distance an electric car can travel before it needs another charge.
Goodyear also introduced the "Triple Tube" concept tire. The Triple Tube has three inflatable tubes inside it that adjust in inflation pressure depending on the conditions of the road.
"These concept tires reimagine the role that tires may play in the future," said Joe Zekoski, Goodyear's senior vice president and chief technical officer. "We envision a future in which our products become more integrated with the vehicle and the consumer, more environmentally friendly and more versatile."
The tires are not ready to be released, but Zekoski said they are a sneak peek of what will likely be coming to the product line. "It is more important than ever for us to stay firmly rooted in our market-back innovation process, which calls on us to focus on, and anticipate, the rapidly evolving needs of our customers," said Zekoski.
