Hershey sues to stop British chocolate imports, angering Cadbury fans

By Aileen Graef

HERSHEY, Pa., Jan. 26 (UPI) -- Hershey's lawsuit to stop the import of British chocolates has angered merchants and lovers of the sweet treats from across the Atlantic.

The lawsuit is against L.B.B., or Let's Buy British Imports, to stop importing chocolate products that closely resemble alternatives from the American company. This includes Cadbury chocolates, KitKat bars made in Britain, Toffee Crisps and Yorkie chocolate bars.

"It is important for Hershey to protect its trademark rights and to prevent consumers from being confused or misled when they see a product name or product package that is confusingly similar to a Hershey name or trade dress," Hershey spokesman Jeff Beckman told the New York Times.

One of the most vocal opponents to this ban is British expatriate Nicky Perry who lives in New York and owns the store Tea & Sympathy which sells specialty chocolates and goods from the U.K.

"Due to legal action by the so-called chocolate maker Hersheys, we can no longer import the real Cadbury chocolate from England," she wrote on the shop's Facebook page. "They want us to sell their dreadful Cadbury approximation but we can't in good conscience sell you such awful chocolate when we have made our reputation on selling you the yummy real English stuff."
