NEW YORK, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- Flavored-Oreo lovers were in for a treat Tuesday after the company officially announced it was releasing a red velvet-flavored cookie.

Oreo's official Twitter account shared the news Tuesday morning, inviting fans to "be the first to taste" the new red velvet Oreo by registering for a contest on the Mondelēz International website.

"Over the next three days, we'll randomly select 20,250 people to be the first to taste these red velvet beauties," reads the description of the contest.

While fans are signing up for their right to taste "the newest (and reddest) OREO cookies before they even hit shelves," Buzzfeed claims to have already done so and gave the cookie its seal of approval.

According to Time, the cookie wafers on their own taste like regular chocolate Oreos, but the artificially-flavored cream cheese center fails to meet expectations. The publication said upon opening the box, the cookies smell like cake.

The red-colored Oreos will be released on Feb. 2 -- just in time for Valentine's Day -- and will sell for $4.49 for 6-8 weeks or until stock lasts.

Rumors about the red velvet-flavored Oreo first surfaced in October of 2014. The popular cookie sandwich is made by the Nabisco division of Mondelēz International in the U.S.
