NEW YORK, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- Playstation's network is back online, more than two days after a cyberattack effectively shut it down -- thwarting the ability of gamers to connect with each other over the holidays.

A hacker group called Lizard Squad took credit for the attack that crippled the networks of both Playstation and Microsoft's XBox Live.

"As you probably know, PlayStation Network and some other gaming services were attacked over the holidays with artificially high levels of traffic designed to disrupt connectivity and online gameplay," Catherine Jensen, vice president of Sony Entertainment, wrote in an updated blog post. "This may have prevented your access to the network and its services over the last few days."

The FBI is reportedly investigating the attacks, which occurred on Christmas Eve.

Microsoft was able to restore its Xbox Live network on Friday; but while Sony eventually admitted the connectivity problems were likely the result of malicious attacks, Microsoft refused to comment on the cause of the network difficulties.

"We don't share info on the root cause of specific issues" a company representative told CNN.
