NEW YORK, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- Amazon began offering Amazon Prime customers in parts of Manhattan delivery in as little as an hour Thursday.

The company plans to expand Prime Now next year.

Prime Now allows customers to use an app to get free two-hour delivery. For those who simply can't wait that long, one-hour service will cost $7.99.

"There are times when you can't make it to the store and other times when you simply don't want to go," Dave Clark, senior vice president of worldwide operations, said in a statement.

Amazon Prime costs $99 a year. Subscribers get a variety of perks, including Amazon's streaming service and free two-day delivery of some items.

Prime Now can be used between 6 a.m. and midnight. The company said those who download its mobile app can browse through the available goods.

Anyone can download the app and do the electronic equivalent of window shopping, but only Prime subscribers can actually place orders. People outside Manhattan who download the app will receive notice when Prime Now arrives in their area.

Amazon, which raised the subscription fee for Prime service from $79 in March, has been adding features.
