At another of its "Uncarrier" events Wednesday night, T-Mobile said it would offer free phones, free service and free music streaming to potential customers in a bid to draw them away from AT&T and Verizon. T-Mobile CEO John Legere has said in the past that other carriers only take money from customers, whereas his company cares about providing the best services.
"It's about transforming an outdated industry," Legere explained during his announcement. "If the other guys do what we're doing, I don't give a shit. I'll celebrate because we changed the industry."
Starting June 23 anyone can sign up for the seven-day test drive, and the company will ship out an iPhone 5S for potential customers to experience the carrier's high-speed network. Users will be able to use data and stream music, though they won't be able to make voice calls.
For existing customers, T-Mobile also announced music streaming won't count against monthly data caps, from services including Spotify, Pandora and iTunes Radio. Further, T-Mobile is launching a new music streaming service is called Rhapsody UnRadio in partnership with Internet music pioneer Rhapsody, which will be free for customers with unlimited data plans and $4 per month for others.
According to Legere the promotion will help customers experience their network, which he says is the "fastest nationwide 4G LTE network" with "more network capacity per user."
"The media spending in our industry is $6 billion," Legere said, referring to the advertising budgets of AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint. "That creates this cacophony of the biggest bull[expletive] in history. This is how America makes wireless decisions."
T-Mobile continues to lead the pack when it comes to innovative plans and services for its customers, as market leaders AT&T and Verizon play catch-up.
