TULARE, Calif., May 19 (UPI) -- Kraft Foods issued a recall Saturday for select varieties of cottage cheese that could spoil prematurely and possibly cause illness.

The recall includes Knudsen Cottage Cheese, Breakstone's Cottage Cheese, Simply Kraft Cottage Cheese and Daily Chef Cottage Cheese with code dates from May 9, 2014 through July 23, 2014. Date codes can be found on the bottom of the cup or on the top of the package.

Only Simply Kraft Cottage Cheese products with a plant code of 06-245 were affected.

"Some ingredients used in these products were not stored in accordance with Kraft's temperature standards," a release from the company said. "While unlikely, this could create conditions that could lead to premature spoilage and/or food borne illness; therefore, the company is issuing the recall as a precaution."

The recall encompasses about 1.2 million cases of the product distributed only within the United States.

The manufacturing facility in Tulare, Calif. -- where the products are made -- has halted production and distribution of the affected cases of cottage cheese while the company addresses the issue.

Those who have the cottage cheese brands with the indicated date codes should return the product to the store where it was purchased for an exchange or refund.
