Markets flat Wednesday

NEW YORK, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- The Standard & Poor's 500 index flirted with a record close for the third day this week, but fell short at the end of trading.

The S&P index closed with a gain of less than 0..01 percent, adding 0.04 points to 1,845.16. The record close for the index is 1,848.38, set Jan. 15.

The Dow Jones industrial average added 0.12 percent, 18.75 points, to 16,198.41. The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite index added 0.1 percent, 4.48 points, to 4,292.06.

On the New York Stock Exchange, 1,880 issues advanced while 1,208 declined on a volume of 3.65 billion shares traded.

In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 index shed 80.63 points, 0.54 percent, to 14,970.97. In London, the FTSE 100 index gave up 31.35 points, 0.46 percent, to 6,799.15.

The 10-year U.S. treasury rose 11/32 to yield 2.664 percent.

The dollar was lower against the euro at $1.3684. The yen was lower against the dollar at 102.36 yen.

Gold lost $13.50, reaching $1,329.20 per ounce on the Comex exchange. Silver lost 73.6 cents to reach $21.265, off 3.35 percent.

Crude oil added 45 cents on the New York Mercantile Exchange, reaching $102.51 in late trading.

On the Chicago Board of Trade May delivery corn lost 1.75 cents to reach $4.595 per bushel. May soybeans added 10.25 cents to $13.975. Wheat was off 12.75 cents $6.0525.
