At work, the perks often involve a married partner

CHICAGO, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- Work and romance frequently involves at least one person in the relationship who is married, a CareerBuilder survey of U.S. workers found.

To start with, 38 percent of U.S. workers indicated they have dated a co-worker and 16 percent indicated they have done so more than once, a pre-Valentines Day survey of 3,008 full time workers found.

"That budding office romance may even lead all the way to the altar, or possibly divorce court," Careerbuilder said, noting that 31 percent of those who dated someone from the same company indicated they ended up married to him or her, as the case may be.

A fifth of those who indicated they had dated a co-worker, however, also indicated that one of the people in the relationship was married at the time.

That could certainly contribute to the secrecy factor, as 39 percent of those dating co-workers indicated they had kept the romance a secret.

If work is just a vehicle for finding a relationship, the leisure and hospitality industry is the best bet, as that sector tops the list with 57 percent indicating they had mixed work and romance at some point. Information and technology was red hot with 46 percent indicating they had spiced up their work life with a co-worker romance at some point.

Forty-two percent of transportation industry workers indicated they revved it up romantically at some point with someone from the same company. Other industries – financial services (38 percent), retail (35 percent), manufacturing (35 percent), healthcare (32 percent) and business services (26 percent) were less romantically inclined, the survey found.

The online survey was conducted Nov. 6 through Dec. 2 by Harris Interactive. The results carry a margin of error or plus and minus 1.79 percentage points.
