The terminals of the pressure switch can come into contact with the motor housing, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Wednesday.
If contact occurs, the air compressor becomes electrified, posing a shock hazard to consumers, the commission said.
The recall involves HDX and Powermate brand two-gallon electric air compressors.
The compressors have a pair of one-gallon tanks, one on top of the other.
They are 120-volt compressors The HDX models are gray with HDX in white letters on the top air tank. The Powermate models are red with Powermate in white letters on the top cylinder.
They were sold at various retailers and online from June 2010 through October 2013 for $80 to $120.
The commission said no injuries have been reported as a result of the problem.
Consumers were advised to stop using the compressors and contact MAT Industries for a free repair.
