TORRANCE, Calif., Jan. 30 (UPI) -- Japanese automaker Toyota said it was halting sales of Avalon, Camry, Corolla and other models because of potentially hazardous heated seats.
The sales cessation applies to Avalon Hybrid, Camry Hybrid, Sienna, Tacoma and Tundra vehicles, as well, but only to those with seat heaters installed in them, the Los Angeles Times reported Thursday.
Toyota said it would not recall cars already sold at this time, but would retrofit the cars that do not meet federal standards for fire resistance at dealerships.
Only a small portion of the seats do not meet standards, the Times reported.
The company said it is "preparing a modification for this condition, which will be implemented on all covered vehicles in dealer inventory."
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration had yet to decide whether or not cars on the road should be recalled.
"We have filed a report. It is up to them to decided where they want to take it," Toyota spokesman John Hanson said.
The problem, Toyota said, was discovered by regulators in South Korea. All of the vehicles with the insufficient fire resistance were made in the United States, the Times said.
