Target investigation is on, says Holder

WASHINGTON, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said Wednesday the Justice Department is investigating the personal information breach at retail giant Target Corp.

Target has said personal information concerning 110 million credit and debit card accounts was compromised by computer hackers in the data breach during the height of the 2013 holiday shopping season.

"We are committed to working to find not only the perpetrators of these sorts of data breaches but also any individuals and groups who exploit that data via credit card fraud," Holder said in a prepared statement at a Senate hearing, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Target had said the Justice Department was investigating the breach, but Holder's statement was the first confirmation from the Justice Department on the probe, the Journal said.
