The Employment Development Department said California gained 13,600 jobs in December.
The largest gains were in professional and business services, which added 8,400 positions in the month, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The state also added 7,800 jobs in tourism, 5,800 in transportation and 4,000 in education and healthcare, the Times said.
Manufacturing, however, lost 6,000 jobs in the month and "other services" which includes mechanics and hair stylists, lost 4,000 jobs.
Information technology lost an additional 2,800 jobs in the month.
Throughout 2013, California gained 235,700 jobs, the state office said.
