The Fed said manufacturing activity rose for durable and non-durable goods with the exception of food, beverage and aerospace products.

The region's production index rose from minus 13 to minus 8. The employment index "jumped from zero to 11, its highest level since October 2011," the monthly report said.

The new orders index, the Fed said, climbed into positive territory for the first time in five months.
