WASHINGTON, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- The U.S. Labor Department said Friday there were 4 million job openings on the last business day in November, a total little changed from October.

The hire rate of 3.3 percent and the separations rate of 3.1 percent were unchanged month-to-month, the department's Bureau of Labor Statistics reported.

The number of job openings fell in the public sector, but rose elsewhere in all four geographic regions, the bureau said.

The number of total hires in November was 4.5 million, little changed from October, the bureau said.

Total separations -- quits, layoffs and discharges and other separations -- totaled 4.3 million in November, also little changed from October.

The quits rate in September was little changed at 1.8 percent while the layoffs and discharges rate was 1.1 percent, unchanged from the previous month.
