Amazon workers to show support for company on their chests

BERLIN, Jan. 7 (UPI) -- Workers for Internet merchant Amazon in Germany say they are protesting fellow workers who have been on strike since late last year.

Organizer Sandra Munch said members of the pro-Amazon group will soon start wearing T-shirts with the words "Pro Amazon," TheLocal.de reported Tuesday.

Amazon opponents have suggested on the Pro Amazon Facebook page the shirts should read "Against better wages."

Workers at Amazon facilities in Leipzig and Bad Hersfeld collected 1,000 signatures in late December on a petition protesting the "negative representation" of the company.

Amazon has been hit with a series of strikes in the past months over pay and working conditions. Not all workers joined the strike, fearing Amazon would move its distribution centers to Poland.

Heiner Reimann, an official with the Verdi Hesse union which organized the strike, accused the pro-Amazon group of "dividing the workforce." He has questioned if the T-shirt campaign wasn't organized by Amazon itself.

Munch denies the claim.

"Certainly not," she said. "It was all our campaign."

Amazon welcomed the support from its workers. A company spokesman said "it shows how the majority of our workers think — that they have fair and good working conditions in the distribution centers."
