First-time jobless claims back under 300,000

WASHINGTON, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- First-time unemployment benefits claims dropped under 300,000 for the week for only the second time since March 2007.

Initial claims fell by 23,000 in the week that ended Saturday to 298,000, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said Thursday.

First-time claims dropped to 294,000 in early September, a month before the partial government shutdown sent claims soaring.

The statistical office revised last week's claims from 316,000 to 321,000. The four-week rolling average of first-time unemployment benefits claims fell by 10,750 to 322,250.
