Construction spending rose in Europe in August

BRUSSELS, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- Construction spending rose by 0.5 percent in the eurozone from July to August and 0.4 percent in the European Union, Eurostat said Thursday.

August data was unavailable from 12 of the 28 countries, including Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Ireland, Greece, Croatia, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta and Austria. It was also marked confidential in Finland.

Of the 15 reporting countries, the Czech Republic reported the largest decline, with spending on construction off 3.6 percent. Declines were also reported by Germany, down 1.9 percent, Romania, down 1.1 percent, and Slovenia, down 2.8 percent.

The largest gain was in Portugal, where spending was up 10.8 percent. That was followed by a 4.8 gain in Sweden, a 4 percent gain in Hungary and a 3.4 percent gain in Italy, the data agency for the European Commission said.
