Toyota announces recall of 10,000 cars

WASHINGTON, Oct. 12 (UPI) -- Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corp. said it is recalling about 10,000 model year 2013 and 2014 cars to replace faulty windshield wiper switches.

The recall involves the 2013-14 Camry and Camry Hybrid, the 2013 Avalon and Avalon Hybrid and the 2014 Corolla, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday.

Toyota, like General Motors Co. and Chrysler before it, is issuing a recall during the shutdown of the U.S. government, which routinely handles automobile recalls through the Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Only about half of the agency's staff are working through the shutdown and recalls are not likely to be announced before the shutdown ends, the Times reported.

Toyota said owners of cars affected by the recall will be sent notices through the mail about how to proceed with a switch replacement, which will be handled by dealerships.
