PIERCE, Neb., Sept. 28 (UPI) -- A tiny Nebraska town has turned into "Mecca" for vintage car collectors, thanks to an auction of more than 500 classic roadsters, the auctioneers said.
Pierce, Neb., population 1,800, was home for more than 50 years to the Lambrecht Chevrolet dealership -- operated by Ray and Mildred Lambrecht, who retired and closed the dealership in 1996 but still live across the street.
During their years of operation, Ray Lambrecht kept scores of classic cars that never sold on the lot. Many have fewer than 10 miles on them, the Omaha World-Herald said.
The whole lot goes up for auction this weekend, drawing enough in-person bidders to more than triple the size of the town itself, auctioneer Yvette VanDerBrink of Hardwick, Minn., said.
"For a collector, this is a field of dreams," she said. "To a car guy, this is a Mecca."
Online pre-bidding offers for the cars has already topped $700,000, VanDerBrink said.
