BOWLING GREEN, Ky., Sept. 19 (UPI) -- The first 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingrays are on their way from the Bowling Green, Ky., assembly plant to dealers, GM announced Thursday.

The Stingray is the first Corvette with the name since 1976. It is the seventh generation of GM's flagship Corvette sports car.

GM spent $131 million upgrading the Bowling Green plant for the Stingray, including $52 million for renovation of the body shop to allow the aluminum frame to be produced in house. Corvettes have been produced exclusively at the Bowling Green plant since 1981.

GM says the new Corvettes can go from 0 to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds, achieve 1.03g in cornering grip and stop from 60 mph in 107 feet. The car is the most fuel-efficient sports car currently on the market, GM said, rated at 17 miles per gallon in the city and 29 on the highway.

The car's price starts at $51,995.
