Gree Electric Appliances Inc. of Zhuhai, China, said the 2.2 million humidifiers sold in the United States and Canada, were shipped under the brand names SoleusAir, Kenmore, Frigidare, Danby, De'Longhi, Fedders, Fellini, Frigidaire, Gree, Kenmore, Norpole, Premiere, Seabreeze, SoleusAir and SuperClima.
The units under recall range from 20-pint to 70-pint dehumidifiers.
Gree has received 165 complaints of dehumidifiers overheating, which represents a small fraction of the units sold, the company said, pointing out that 46 reports included incidents of fire. Property damage caused by the fires totaled $2.15 million, the company said in a release.
Gree said the complaints only involved dehumidifiers made before they were redesigned in November 2012.
A consulting team of engineers traced the overheating problem to units with low levels of refrigerant.
Consumers were advised to stop using the recalled appliances and unplug them.
Consumers were also advised to call Stericycle ExpertRECALL at 866-853-2802 for information concerning a refund.
