The Consumer Product Safety Commission said the recall involves about 165,000 blender containers in the United States and 4,300 in Canada.
A broken blade poses a laceration hazard, the agency said.
The blenders were sold nationwide from April 2012 through August 2013 for about $529 to $749 with a different model base or for $149 for the container alone.
The recall involves blenders with blade part number 103208 A and blade date 13-12 through 07-13, which means March 2012 through July 2013.
The identifying blade information can be found etched onto the top of the blade and at the bottom of the container.
Consumers were advised to stop using the blenders and contact Vitamix for instructions on how to send the container back for a free repair.
Consumers can call 888-350-4386 for information.
