A spokesman said Twitter#PAC will try to influence Congress's legislation on issues related to the company's major concerns, The Washington Post reported. The company will also have a lobbyist.
"We expect to continue to play an active role in speaking up on issues related to internet freedom, government access to user data, patent reform and freedom of expression," Twitter spokesman Jim Prosser said.
Twitter, founded in 2006 by Jack Dorsey, has quickly become a worldwide institution with 500 million registered users and 340 million tweets every day. Those communicating by Twitter include Pope Francis (@Pontifex).
William Carty, a Republican aide to the House and Senate commerce committees before joining Twitter last year, is to become its registered lobbyist, the company said. Carty will continue to work in Twitter's Washington office.
