Datsun to be resurrected for Indian audience

NEW DELHI, July 15 (UPI) -- Japanese auto company Nissan said it was resurrecting the retired Datsun brand by introducing the Datsun Go for the Indian market.

CNNMoney reported Monday that the five-door hatchback Go will be priced under $7,000 -- about 400,000 Indian rupees.

It will be in showrooms in early 2014.

While many details have not been released, it is expected to come with 1.2-liter engine and a five-speed transmission.

"We see significant opportunities in these growth markets, where demand for cars is increasing and will continue to do so," Nissan Chief Executive Officer Carlos Ghosn said Monday.

Nissan is using the Go to expand in emerging markets, part of a larger company strategy. Ghosn said new models will be introduced in Indonesia and Russia this year and in South Africa in 2014.
