GM recalling 231,000 SUVs over fire danger

DETROIT, June 17 (UPI) -- U.S. automaker General Motors Co. is recalling 231,000 sport utility vehicles for a fire risk and recommends owners park them outside until they are fixed.

The recall is for 193,000 2006-2007 Chevrolet Trailblazers, GMC Envoys, Buick Rainiers, SAAB 9-7Xs, Isuzu Ascenders, and 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer EXTs and GMC Envoy XLs in the United States. Another 3,546 units are being recalled in Canada, 4,876 in Mexico and 30,000 outside North America, The Detroit News reported Sunday.

GM says fluid may enter the driver's door, causing rust that could short out the circuit board, causing overheating that could cause a fire.

At least 28 door fires have been reported, resulting in six injuries and damage to two properties, the newspaper said. Some of the fires occurred when the vehicle was left unattended.

The News said it is the second recall of 2006-2007 GM SUVs for the issue since August. GM has now recalled nearly 443,000 SUVs related to the door short-circuiting problem in the United States.
