WASHINGTON, March 22 (UPI) -- Vista, Calif., importer Aqua Lung is recalling 110,000 buoyancy compensators due to a flaw that could prevent a diver from surfacing, regulators said.
The buoyancy compensators, used by scuba divers, have rubber handles that could detach as divers are trying to remove weight pockets. The problem could result in drowning, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said in a statement.
The recall involves buoyancy compensators with SureLock II rubber handles attached to weight pockets.
The Axiom, Axiom i3, Balance, Black Diamond, Dimension, Libra, Lotus, Pearl, Pearl i3, Pro LT, Pro QD, Pro QDi3 and Zuma models are involved in the recall. The model's name is embroidered on the inside back pad or the weight pocket's right lobe, the commission said.
The company has heard of 236 incidents involving the rubber handles but none that have resulted in injuries.
The buoyancy compensators were sold from September 2008 through September 2012 for $460-$700.
Consumers were advised to stop using the buoyancy compensators and return the two weight pockets to an authorized Aqua Lung dealer for a free inspection and a free replacement if necessary.
Consumers can call 855-355-7170 for information.
