March 6, 2013 at 6:04 PM

NEW YORK, March 6 (UPI) -- Gold and silver prices made modest gains Wednesday in New York despite a stronger dollar.

The dollar was mixed in Asia, but made broad gains in Europe.

On Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average set a new all-time closing high, making some investors nervous about how long the winning run will last.

Gold added $8.90 to $1,583.70 per troy ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.

The price for silver closed up 35 cents at $29.02 an ounce.

Against the dollar the euro was lower at $1.2978 from Tuesday's $1.3051. Against the yen, the dollar was higher at 93.98 yen from 93.29 yen.

The British pound fell to $1.5003 from $1.5127. The dollar rose to 1.0319 Canadian dollars from 1.027 Canadian.

The dollar held steady at 7.7557 Hong Kong dollars.
