Britt's contract is to expire at the end of 2013, a person knowledgeable about the situation told the newspaper. It was to have expired at the end of last year, but the company extended it in July, securities filings indicated.

Others familiar with the situation told the Journal Rob Marcus, Time Warner Cable's chief operating officer, was among the leading candidates to succeed Britt.

Britt has led Time Warner Cable since August 2001, a period during which the company was spun off from Time Warner Inc.
